The word “proficient” seems optimistic. It appears to be a hopeful adjective, focusing on the good capabilities of an individual, a team or a program. However, to me it has a rather disappointing connotation.

Let’s face it, we have guilty pleasures. We all have these niche interests or hobbies that make us happy and give us some serotonin. The difference, however, between “normal” hobbies and guilty pleasures is that the latter is accompanied by some sort of stigma. When we are participating in a guilty pleasure, we might feel embarrassed to an extent. We might keep it a secret from those around us. It’s a struggle that we bear every single day without even realizing it. With all the added stress and hassles of our lives, our little habits can sometimes be our only respite to the chaos outside our windows. But, it feels like even when we’re trying to get a break from everything, we bear a little stress because we feel ashamed about our interests. This all boils down to one question — should we feel bad about them?

Usually, my biggest worry during the semester is my grades — am I going to be able to maintain the letter grade I have been working towards or not? However, my priorities are a lot different this semester, like many other things. Instead of being worked up about points I missed on an assignment, I find myself getting agitated by encounters with people who refuse to wear masks or those who wear theirs incorrectly. My biggest worry now is getting coronavirus. And a few days ago, it almost came true.

The University’s Department of Art hosted “Art as Transformation: Using Photography for Social Change,” a talk with photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier, on Oct. 27. Frazier’s award-winning photo-history book “The Notion of Family” explores the impacts of racism and economic decline in America’s small towns, as embodied in Frazier’s hometown of Braddock, Pa. From Pennsylvania to Flint, Mich. to the Borinage in Belgium, Frazier’s photography confronts social and political legacies plaguing marginalized groups and reclaims a distinct and thoughtful space for those voices to be recognized and celebrated.

It has come to my attention that even though we are in a pandemic, life doesn’t slow down. We’re still constantly bombarded by the news with 24/7 updates on the infection rate, the economic status of the country and weary reporters discussing the latest disastrous town hall. On top of that, we’re restricted to the confines of our rooms, which makes it even more difficult to find solace amid the chaos.

Halloween has irregular aesthetics. Every year, we find ourselves at the crossroads of pumpkin pancakes and emulating the mannerisms of the “Hocus Pocus” witches for a week. But that’s not a bad thing. Halloween is up for individual interpretation — making it one of our most cherished fabricated customs. You can perform Halloween with a movie, with decorations, with storytelling, with cookies — with just about anything else you could imagine — within the unspoken pseudo-supernatural guidelines, of course. You can also, believe it or not, perform Halloween with music — and with Halloween up against a global pandemic, this performance might be the safest bet. Let these entirely Halloween-unaffiliated songs get you in the mood for our favorite time of the year.

Ah, fall. It’s the time of year when the air gets crisp and many students are living on their own for the first time. Plenty of Hoos are struggling to avoid death-by-ramen and opt for proper sustenance without spending their tuition’s worth on groceries. In fact, you may be one of those poor souls yourself.
