The Faculty Senate met Friday to discuss and pass a resolution expressing discontent with the timeline of the presidential search process. The resolution also called for finalist candidates to ask for a pause in the process, after a previous resolution had asked for a halt in the presidential search. Senators also heard updates from interim University President Paul Mahoney regarding an upcoming report to the Justice Department.

Early on in the 2025-26 season, Virginia women’s basketball has demonstrated its high ceiling. Veteran offseason additions have given Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton’s Cavaliers (8-3, 1-0 ACC) much-needed stability after a roller-coaster-like experience last season, which oscillated between ranked victories and grotesque losses.

A Virginia resident who goes by the alias Ahmed sat in the harshly-lit living quarters of the Immigration Centers of America facility in Farmville earlier this year. Charlottesville Tomorrow reported how he was surrounded by rows of metal beds as one of several asylum seekers from Charlottesville being held there while awaiting their court date. While Ahmed was ultimately released last month, he should have been at home with his family and lawyers preparing for the case months earlier. Instead, the initial bond granted to him by a local immigration court for his temporary release was denied by the Department of Homeland Security.

The full Board of Visitors met Friday to hear reports from Interim University President Paul Mahoney on the University’s agreement with the Justice Department, the state of research at the University and his vision for the University moving forward. The Board also met in closed session for almost three hours to discuss legal and security matters, employee appointments and updates on the search for the University’s 10th president.

The Board of Visitors Finance Committee met Friday to hear from various members of University leadership and the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. University leadership shared updates on the debt profile and endowment fund and the Weldon Cooper Center presented a report on the University’s impact on various regions in the state and the state as a whole.

Virginia men’s and women’s squash finished up a tough early-season stretch of matches at the McArthur Squash Center, where they faced two Ivy League opponents — usually the most skilled conference in college squash. The No. 4 men’s side (7-2, 0-0 MASC) lost to No. 3 Harvard but drubbed No. 10 Cornell. On the women’s side, the No. 6 Cavaliers (6-2, 0-0 MASC) were also defeated by the No. 1 Crimson and pulled through against the No. 6 Big Red.

The Board of Visitors’ Academic and Student Life Committee convened Thursday afternoon to hear updates from Brie Gertler, interim executive vice president and provost, and the Partnership for Leaders in Education program. They also heard a presentation on student experiences at the University and voted on the discontinuation of two degree programs and the approval of two new graduate programs.

The Advancement Committee of the University’s Board of Visitors met Thursday to hear a presentation on the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences — which doubled its endowment in just two years — by Dean Christa Davis Acampora. The Committee also heard a brief report on initiatives tied to the “Honor the Future” campaign and fundraising progress nearly halfway through the fiscal year.

The Board of Visitors’ Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee announced Friday that the University received an unmodified, or “clean” audit opinion for fiscal year 2025, formally closing out a three-year process to resolve a material weakness in the University’s financial reporting.

During the Board of Visitors’ Committee on the College at Wise meeting Friday, the Board heard a presentation from Chancellor of Wise Donna Henry regarding current enrollment statistics and how the school’s tuition compares to other public institutions in the state of Virginia. The committee additionally approved two new master's programs for the College at Wise.

If there is one thing the Cavaliers have relied on all season, it is their ability to bounce back after a tough loss. After suffering at the hands of a potent Vanderbilt offense in the ACC/SEC challenge, Virginia (7-3, 1-0 ACC) did not skip a beat in Chestnut Hill, Mass., versus Boston College. Almost exactly one year ago, the Cavaliers shot a ghastly 2-for-23 from three-point range against the Eagles (4-8, 0-1 ACC), losing by 15 to extend a four-game losing streak.

Health chief financial officer, during their meeting Thursday. The Board additionally heard a presentation from Jonathan Lindner, professor of medicine and University vice-chief for research for the cardiovascular division regarding current cardiovascular research studies.
