The Big Ten claimed its third consecutive victory in the annual Big Ten-ACC Challenge as eight of its 12 teams bested their respective ACC opponents. Virginia did its part for the conference by dispatching No. 14 Michigan in the first Challenge contest Tuesday, but beyond Clemson's 71-55 success against Iowa, the day belonged to the Big Ten.

Despite milestone performances from two seniors, the Virginia volleyball team failed to finish its 2011 season with a victory against in-state rival Virginia Tech. The Hokies held off the upstart Cavaliers for a five-set victory, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 15-9 Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium.

In an early midweek game against Winthrop which even the band's tuba section missed, the Cavalier offense almost forgot to show up as well. The Virginia men's basketball team trailed the upstart Eagles 44-41 with 10:30 to play, but a typically tough defensive effort and a career-high 17 points from junior guard Jontel Evans carried the Cavaliers to a 69-48 victory at John Paul Jones Arena.

After winning his third season opener in as many seasons Sunday, coach Tony Bennett hopes his team can bring an undefeated record to this weekend's U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. When you lose a loved one, a tidal wave of emotion washes over you. At the funeral. The wake. After the first week, month, year. The waves - a mixture of grief, denial, anger, loneliness - ebb and flow with time, sometimes fast and furious, other times so slowly and gently that they barely skim the surface of your consciousness. But while the waters of time bring healing and hope for the future, they cannot completely conceal the fact that when a loved one leaves you, a little part inside of you dies. It is, without question, the worst experience one can endure in this life.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Have you heard the story of the tortoise and the 'Hoo? It's remarkably similar to Aesop's fable about the tortoise and the hare - so similar, in fact, that the Honor Committee might have a few choice words for me on poor Aesop's account. But thankfully for the Virginia football team and for my standing in the community of trust, the ending of this edition of the famous children's tale took a decidedly different turn.
