It would be unfair to diminish coach Tony Bennett’s success the past two seasons. How far the Virginia basketball program has come since that fateful 87-52 loss against Tennessee Dec. 30, 2013 is truly remarkable.

If there was any doubt left about whether Virginia senior guard Malcolm Brogdon deserved to become the first ever player to win both ACC player of the year and defensive player of the year in the same season, it should be quelled after Thursday night.

Virginia’s game against North Carolina Saturday certainly wasn’t a must-win situation, but it was an important stepping-stone for the team.

By all accounts, Saturday wasn’t prototypical Virginia basketball. The Tar Heels, after all, dropped 74 points on coach Tony Bennett’s vaunted pack-line defense, which by game time Saturday was holding teams to 59.7 points per game. And not just that — North Carolina shot 49.2 percent from the floor, including 47.4 percent from the three-point line.

For as much success as Virginia has had over the past two-and-a-half seasons, it has had a good number of heartbreakers too. Back-to-back NCAA tournament losses against Michigan State will surely haunt the basketball community well into the future.

And, after all, it was only 11 days since the Cavaliers needed a miracle to win at Wake Forest.

Virginia’s early-season wins against then-No. 12 Villanova, No. 14 West Virginia and California were all nice. Even the recent victory against then-No. 8 Miami was impressive. But none compare to the statement the Cavaliers made Saturday against Louisville.

Entering the 2015-16 Virginia men’s basketball season it was no secret the Cavaliers are a veteran squad. Even with the loss of guard Justin Anderson – who would have been a senior – the Cavaliers knew they would possess more experience than most of their foes.
