Virginia women’s lacrosse kept the momentum going from its last outing and narrowly defeated Stanford at Klöckner Stadium Sunday. The Cavaliers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) entered halftime down two goals, but a strong second half secured a victory over the Cardinal (0-1, 0-0 Pac 12) by a score of 10-9.
Virginia women’s basketball traveled to Winston-Salem, N.C. Sunday to take on Wake Forest in an ACC showdown. Though the Demon Deacons (4-20, 0-12 ACC) pulled up to within two possessions late in the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers (12-12, 4-9 ACC) made enough plays down the final stretch to eke out an 87-79 victory and earn their second consecutive conference win.
Virginia Swim and Dive hosted the Cavalier Invite over the weekend and yet again showed its depth in a dominating performance. Ranked No. 1 on the women’s side and No. 20 on the men’s, both teams have had impressive seasons that they are hoping to continue into the ACC Championships later this month. Over the three-day Invite, the Cavaliers notched 64 personal bests and five Aquatic and Fitness Center Pool Records. Notably, United States National Team member junior Jack Aikins did not swim as he is taking a gap year to prepare for the Summer Olympics. The meet was held in the NCAA Championship style and included all NCAA Championship events. The field consisted of 11 teams, which alongside Virginia, included Duke, George Washington, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, South Carolina, St. Bonaventure, Army, North Carolina Wilmington, Richmond and William & Mary.
In an email to the student body, Christa Acampora, chair of the Task Force on Religious Diversity and Belonging and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, provided updates on the committee, which began collecting data and speaking with students in January.
With nearly 20 dance teams on Grounds, it is safe to say that the students of U.Va. know how to bust a move. From ballroom to bachata, these teams represent a wide variety of dance styles and levels, teaching those who are new to dance and providing an outlet for those who have danced for years.
Virginia softball kicked off its 2024 season with five games across three days at the South Carolina Tournament. The Cavaliers (3-2, 0-0 ACC) started strongly with two wins over North Carolina Greensboro (1-4, 0-0 SoCon) and a victory against Jacksonville State (1-4, 0-0 OVC), but lost their last two contests to South Carolina (5-0, 0-0 SEC).

Virginia men’s lacrosse dominated Klöckner Stadium Saturday in its season opener against Michigan. The No. 3 Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) controlled the game from the outset, smothering the No. 8 Wolverines (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) and cruising to a 19-11 win. A boisterous first half unfolded before a packed stadium, but the atmosphere mellowed as the gulf in the scoreboard stretched wider.

Virginia track and field was back in action Friday and Saturday, this time representing the Cavaliers across three different meets — the Eagle Elite Invitational and the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston and the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C. Virginia only continued to climb as it broke school and personal records, some of which the Cavaliers had just set the previous week, showcasing excellent momentum as they set their sights on the ACC Indoor Championships next week.
Following an all-encompassing victory Monday against Miami and its high-octane offense, the Cavaliers (19-5, 10-3 ACC) looked to beat a team of similar firepower in Florida State (13-10, 7-5 ACC) away from the friendly confines of John Paul Jones Arena. Coach Tony Bennett opted for a similar approach to that which has been working for Virginia as of late, featuring graduate forward Jordan Minor in the starting lineup to give the Cavaliers strength in the post. Ultimately, the Cavaliers escaped with an 80-76 triumph.
No. 11 Virginia women’s tennis (8-2, 0-0 ACC) competed at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship this weekend, notching an impressive 5-2 upset victory against No. 6 Pepperdine (2-2, 0-0 WCC) before they were defeated by 4-seed No. 5 Michigan (7-1, 0-0 Big Ten) in the quarterfinals Saturday. After falling to Michigan, however, they went on to defeat No. 1 North Carolina in the consolation match to end the weekend on a high note.
With Class of 2028 acceptances starting to roll out, I couldn’t help but feel a bit nostalgic. I vividly remember my acceptance to the University three years ago, and the excitement and joy that accompanied my letter of admission. Halfway through my third year, I also now realize how little I knew about the realities of day-to-day college life. Here are some thoughts and reflections about my time at the University so far.
Nine Black-owned Charlottesville and student-run businesses arrived on Peabody Lawn Saturday for the Black Economic Empowerment Society’s inaugural pop-up shop event. Despite cloudy weather, there was an air of excitement as vendors set up their tents and shared their products with visitors. As BEES’ first event involving local businesses, the pop-up shop demonstrated crucial progress in connecting the Black communities of the University and Charlottesville as a whole.

Virginia women’s lacrosse impressed in their season opener against Liberty Friday, taking home a 14-6 victory at Liberty Lacrosse Field in Lynchburg, Va. The Cavaliers (1-0, 0-0 ACC) were led by graduate attacker Katia Carnevale and senior midfielder Mackenzie Hoeg who scored four goals and three goals respectively. The Flames (0-1, 0-0 ASUN) managed 18 shots on goal, however they were met consistently by sophomore goaltender Mel Josephson, who had an impressive 12 saves to give her an overall save percentage of 66 percent.

After a rough loss in the Commonwealth Clash, the Virginia wrestling team had a week off before their toughest match yet, a Friday road trip down to face NC State. The No. 8 Wolfpack (13-2, 3-0 ACC) boast ranked wrestlers in every class, and it showed in their dominant 38-3 victory over the Cavaliers (7-4, 1-2 ACC).
With a seemingly unlimited transfer portal, contemporary college football is volatile. There are now multiple transfer portal windows, multiple national signing days and a constant whirlwind of change. Past the chaos though, there is a clear silver lining — a program can go from rags to riches in less than 24 hours. With his latest wide receiver signings, Coach Tony Elliott has struck gold.
