Board of Visitors discusses construction, leadership, NCAA guidelines

The Board of Visitors met in full Friday afternoon to highlight committee discussions, including NCAA regulations, building renovations and the University’s financial situation.The Board reviewed plans and funding for major renovation projects scheduled for Clemons Library and the McCormick Road and Gooch/Dillard Residence Areas, and examined the new contract that the University completed with Aramark, which will remain the vendor for dining services for the next 20 years.

Charlottesville hosts Pride Festival

By Katherine WilkinThe Charlottesville LGBTQ community and supporters came together Saturday in Lee Park, adjacent to the Downtown Mall, for the third annual CVille Pride Festival.CVille Pride spokesperson Amy Sarah Marshall said the event was an opportunity for the LGBTQ community to experience a sense of belonging.“The festival gives people, not just in Charlottesville proper but the region, an opportunity to be in a safe place, where they know that being in this park on this day for this many hours, they can be completely themselves without fear of recrimination,” Marshall said.

Students remember 9/11

Nearly one hundred University students gathered last night in Minor Hall to commemorate the events of 9/11 during the second annual Never Forget ceremony. The University’s Young Americans for Freedom hosted the event along with the Burke Society, University Democrats and College Republicans.

Library System plans Alderman renovation

Alderman Library, the heart of the University library system, houses approximately three million volumes — valued together at $104 million — and serves as a major study space for students. The library is beginning to show signs of age, however, and renovation planning is already underway.

But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
