Virginia looks to sustain momentum against Notre Dame

Two weeks ago, the Cavaliers found themselves in a bind. Sitting at two games below .500, Virginia was essentially in do-or-die mode. A pair of wins against Old Dominion and American were vital to the Cavaliers’ chance to make their 20th consecutive NCAA tournament under coach Julie Myers.


	Junior midfielder Daniela Eppler scored her second goal of the season with 6:05 to go in the first half of Virginia’s Tuesday night win against American. The Cavaliers won their second straight game.

Women's Lacrosse soars past Eagles

Virginia (6-6, 0-3 ACC) came out firing on all cylinders Tuesday night, dominating every facet of the game to secure an 18-4 win against an overwhelmed American (4-9, 0-4 Patriot League) squad.


	Derek Jeter and the Yankees lost to the Houston Astros Tuesday in their first game of the season. Major League Baseball is back, and columnist Kerry Mitchell is glad for it.

Leading off: Opening Day 2014

Opening Day is not a national holiday yet – keep at it, Ozzie, I’m with you – but it sure felt like one for baseball fans. Monday alone was full of storylines that, over the course of 162 games, will only get better – or at least, more interesting.


	Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine has pitched 103.2 of Virginia’s 178.2 innings in the field in 2014. The Cavaliers play Longwood in a road doubleheader Wednesday.

Softball set for Longwood doubleheader

Virginia softball continues its season with a midweek doubleheader against Longwood in Farmville, Va. The Cavaliers (4-27, 1-13 ACC) are coming off three road losses to Pittsburgh and hope to better hold the leads they work so hard to earn.

Men's tennis grabs victory in three home matches

No. 4 Virginia men’s tennis won three home matches this weekend, the first time the team has competed in Charlottesville in almost a month. However, rain and cold weather forced all three bouts — against Miami, Florida State and William & Mary — to be played at the Boar’s Head Sports Club instead of the normal venue, the Snyder Tennis Center.

Baseball sweeps three game series against Hokies

Howard sealed Virginia’s 2-1 series-opening win and gave a repeat performance in Sunday’s finale, when he got Hokie junior catcher Mark Zagunis to ground out to junior Branden Cogswell at shortstop for the final out in a 7-4 decision. The No. 2 Cavaliers (23-4, 10-2 ACC) swept the Hokies (12-12, 5-7 ACC) after dropping both games of a doubleheader in Blacksburg last April 27-28, solidifying their place atop the conference’s Coastal division in the process.

Men conclude season, place 26th at NCAAs

Virginia brought its season to a close on Saturday with a 26th place finish at the Men’s NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers scored 23 points, the sixth most among all ACC teams. The finish marked a slight improvement over last season’s NCAA meet, where Virginia finished 27th with 22 points.

Cavs post strong showing at Texas, Raleigh Relays

Virginia track and field continued its season with two meets this weekend, the Texas Relays and Raleigh Relays. The Cavaliers set a slew of personal bests and put up solid results while facing some of nation’s best teams.

Michigan State knocks Virginia out of NCAA Tournament

NEW YORK — At some point, the Virginia men’s basketball team’s luck had to run out. They had won an ACC regular season title, an ACC Tournament championship and had made it to the Sweet Sixteen, extending one of the most successful seasons in the program’s recent history. Friday night at Madison Square Garden, the Cavaliers’ stunning run came to an end as they lost 61-59 to Michigan State, bowing out of the NCAA Tournament.
