Cavs aim to top surging Maryland in season

The snow in Charlottesville may be melting, but the Virginia men's basketball team remains ice cold after a 68-55 loss at Boston College Wednesday stretched its losing streak to a dismal eight games. The Cavaliers (14-14, 5-10 ACC) will hope to turn things around this weekend as they face a Maryland team that throttled Virginia 85-66 at College Park, Md.

Matmen square off in ACC tourney

Following a two-week break since their last match, the No. 23 Cavaliers look to make a run in this weekend's ACC Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. The ACC's dearth of wrestling programs - only six schools have wrestling teams - will work to Virginia's advantage this weekend, coach Steve Garland said.

The men's track and field team took fourth at the ACC Indoor Championships last week at Virginia Tech, while the women took 10th, combining for five titles. During the first day, Virginia swept both the women's and men's distant medley relays.

Virginia loses eighth straight game

Despite a surprise starting appearance from sophomore guard Sylven Landesberg, the Virginia men's basketball team lost 68-55 yesterday night against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Earlier this week, coach Tony Bennett said Landesberg had not practiced because of a bruised thigh, which kept him out of Sunday's home loss to Duke.

Much has been written and said about All-ACC guard Monica Wright, who played her final home game and whose jersey was retired Sunday, but the most meaningful to me came from her mentor and friend, coach Debbie Ryan. "She's taught everyone here about what character really is," Ryan said.
