As a pitcher who relies on a variety of drops and bouncers, senior Stacey Zagol is bouncing back from a mediocre junior season to turn in a career year in her final months with the Virginia softball team. After an outstanding sophomore campaign during which she compiled 19 wins and was named to the ACC All-Conference and All-Tournament teams, Zagol experienced quite a drop-off last year.
His team trailing 5-2, his pride sullied after a first-period brawl that left him belly up, Marty McSorley decided enough was enough. As the precious few seconds ticked off the Vancouver Jumbotron one by one, the Boston Bruins forward did the unexpected, the unbelievable and the unforgivable. With a ferocious flick of his right wrist, McSorley, a notorious NHL rogue, whacked unsuspecting Canuck Donald Brashear in the side of the head with his stick.

After battling through the rain and cold Tuesday against Harvard, the Virginia softball team was rewarded with sunshine yesterday and responded with two wins in a doubleheader with the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at The Park. The Cavaliers (15-25) won the first game 1-0 behind solid defense and a complete game two-hit shutout from righthander Chrissy Quinn (4-9). After her stellar six-strikeout performance against the Retrievers (12-15), the senior captain credited her defense. "We played really strong defensively and then came up with two big hits to score that one run," Quinn said.

Virginia's (14-14-1) magical four-run first inning began with Shawn McCleary scoring from third on a wild pitch by Spider right-hander Tom Mahony.
After the first few rounds of the NCAA Tournament, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore. But I also never thought North Carolina had a chance at making the Final Four. While I am still shocked at how a team that was so mediocre throughout the regular season could perform so well in the Tournament, I can take comfort in knowing that at least I wasn't the only one surprised by the Tar Heels' performance lately. After all, if the North Carolina men's basketball players believed they had any chance at making the Final Four, Tar Heel point guards Ed Cota and Terrence Newby would not have scheduled their court date for April 3, the date of the national championship game in Indianapolis. The April 3 court date was Cota and Newby's third attempt at an appearance in district court for an Oct.

I stand before you today, gentle readers, a wiser man. Much like the blind Greek soothsayer Tieresias - or perhaps more like Yoda - I have seen the future.
Still recovering from her team's crushing defeat to Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament third round Sunday, Virginia point guard Renee Robinson took time to look back.
