Cavaliers emphasize basics going into ITA tournament

Following its first regular season loss since 2006 Saturday, the No. 2 Virginia men's tennis team now looks to reclaim its dominance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Team Indoor Championship this weekend at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. Virginia will be joined by 15 other top teams in the country, including No.

Two goals, one puck

Let's get one thing straight before I get called a spineless, syrup-sucking ne'er-do-well because I'm writing a column about a sport other than Virginia men's basketball - I'm just as ecstatic as the next 'Hoo about the Cavaliers' unexpected ascent up the ACC ladder, but the way I see it, I'm actually doing Will Sherrill & Co. a big favor in the karma department.

Weather delays men

The men's basketball game originally scheduled against the Terrapins tonight at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md., has been postponed to Monday because of inclement weather conditions. The University of Maryland's campus has been closed since Friday as a result of last weekend's winter storm. Though the Terrapins played against North Carolina at home last Sunday, the anticipated foot of snow tonight in the Washington, D.C., area would make it "impossible" to clear the roads and parking lots in time for the game tonight, according to University officials. Before heading to College Park next Monday, Virginia will take on in-state rival Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Saturday. -compiled by Andrew Seidman

New recruits fortify roster for London

Holding onto old recruits can be worrisome for schools undergoing a coaching change. And so when Mike London signed on as Virginia's new head coach, he and his new assistants immediately went to work confirming recruits who had signed with former coach Al Groh.

Virginia hosts Deacons Saturday in rematch of January loss

Aiming to avenge a one-sided Jan. 23 defeat in Winston-Salem, the Virginia men's basketball team plays host to Wake Forest tomorrow at the John Paul Jones Arena. The Demon Deacons (15-5, 5-3 ACC) handed the Cavaliers (14-6, 5-2 ACC) their first ACC loss of the season with the 69-57 result, and ended an eight-game Virginia win streak. Sophomore guard Sylven Landesberg outscored the rest of Virginia's starting five in the contest, contributing 18 of the starters' 32 points.

Dancin'

Things I never thought I would say: "Oh no, Will Sherrill looks like he might be hurt - that would be very bad for the team." Last season, Sherrill was a complete non-factor for the Cavaliers.
