First varsity eight garner ACC weekly honors After coming from behind to take the grand final victory at the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic, the Virginia women's rowing team's first varsity eight boat was named ACC Crew of the Week. The boat was comprised of coxswain Betty Shumaker, rowers Hayley Nunn, Madeline Engel, Molly Baker, Lauren Mitterer, Jen Reck, Meg Van Dam, Carolyn McMillian and Amanda Kennedy.

Dennis leads team from mound and plate

At the age when most children are learning how to ride bikes with training wheels or to run without bringing home skinned knees, Kristen Dennis was picking up a Nerf baseball bat and slamming home runs over the hedge of her family's yard. Starting to play organized softball in San Diego recreation leagues when she was six-years-old, Dennis' early exposure to the sport appears to have served the Virginia softball phenom well.

Virginia midfielder Nick Russo was named ACC men's lacrosse Player of the Week yesterday for his efforts in the Cavaliers' victory over Duke Saturday, the team's seventh victory in a row. Russo, a senior from Port Jefferson, N.Y., tallied two goals and an assist against the Blue Devils in the Cavaliers' 15-10 victory that clinched the ACC regular season championship.

Cav alum, coach makes strong showing in Seoul

In 1997, Dana Coons walked on to the Virginia cross country team. Five years later, while serving as an assistant coach for distance and cross country runners, Coons, a 2001 University graduate, was selected to represent the United States in the April 7 Seoul Women's Ekiden race in Seoul, South Korea. Coons ran the third fastest six kilometer leg of the Seoul Ekiden, helping the United States finish seventh while the Russian and Japanese teams took first and second place, respectively. "My trip to Seoul was a wonderful and memorable experience," Coons said.

The Virginia women's club gymnastics team ended its season with an 11th place finish in the NAIGC National Championships, where 27 women's teams and 260 women competed at Ohio State last weekend.

Dominant Cavaliers look to trounce GMU

The No. 3 Virginia and No. 19 George Mason women's lacrosse teams may play in the same state, but they are coming from completely different directions heading into today's matchup. The Cavaliers (11-2, 3-0 ACC) have won six straight games, including four wins in a row over opponents ranked in the top 20.

The Virginia women's rowing team won four events Saturday at the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic held in Washington, D.C. The Cavaliers finished first in the varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the varsity four and the second novice eight. Virginia took the varsity eight competition for the seventh year in a row with a time of six minutes, 35.1 seconds, followed by Columbia (6:37.3). The Cavaliers' second varsity eight won its race in 6:39.4, followed by Columbia (6:53.5). The Cavaliers finished first with a two-under 862.

Heels take pair from Cavs

On a day that saw the softball team lose two one-run games to North Carolina at home, frustration was the team's overriding emotion. After blanking the Cavaliers (38-17, 0-4 ACC) 1-0 in the first game of yesterday's doubleheader, North Carolina (29-21, 2-2) led 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
