Venus should stay in tennis orbit, resist pull of dad's advice

I've played it out in my mind time and time again. Would I do my best John Elway, triumphantly leaving the industry while at the pinnacle of my career (which could have been my sophomore year of high school for all I know)? Would I pull a Sugar Ray Leonard, retiring at the top before lugging my aching bones back into the journalistic arena for a couple of more rounds ... or columns? Actually, neither. As of right now, I'm finished.

Spartans showed their toughness while injury sidelined Cleaves

After watching Florida use its depth to dismantle the Duke and North Carolina men's basketball squads en route to the NCAA championship game, I thought they stood a chance against Michigan State. While watching Monday night's 89-76 Spartan victory over the Gators, I expected Florida's press-and-run style of play to make the game competitive.

Vahaly, men's tennis cruise past Terrapins

The Virginia men's tennis team lost only one match against Maryland to return to the win column with a 6-1 victory over the Terps. Although Cav coach Dick Stockton used only three of his regular singles competitors, the Cavaliers still captured five of the six singles contests.

Richmond knocks out baseball, 16-8

After shocking No. 1 Florida State in the second game of a three-game series last weekend, one would imagine the Cavalier baseball team would be ready to destroy Richmond, a squad that entered yesterday's contest at Virginia with a seven-game losing streak. However, the in-state rival Spiders bombarded the injury-plagued Cavaliers (15-18-1, 3-6 ACC) for 18 hits and a 16-8 upset at U.Va.

Crew breezes to San Diego Classic victory

The Virginia women's crew team continued to succeed against some of the nation's best competition Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Cavaliers won the championship in the second varsity eight competition with a time of 6:39.5.

Tar Heels stomp softball in conference opening series

The Virginia softball team left the cold and rainy Park Sunday afternoon dejected after a performance Virginia coach Cheryl Sprangel called frustrating and embarrassing. The Cavaliers dropped to 15-27 overall and 0-2 in the ACC, losing to North Carolina (31-13, 2-0) for the second time this weekend.

Moses takes two more breaststroke titles

Just one week after demolishing the world short-course records in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke at the NCAA Championships, Virginia swimmer Ed Moses cruised to victory in the same events at the National Championships in Federal Way, Wash. Moses, who said he tapered his training to peak at the NCAAs 10 days ago in Minneapolis, still won easily, taking both events by almost a full second.

NCAA rules two Jefferson Scholar athletes ineligible

The Virginia Athletic Department has declared two athletes who are also Jefferson Scholars ineligible because the scholarships are considered impermissible financial aid under NCAA regulations. According to Lynn Mitchell, the University's associate athletic director for compliance, the University athletic department ruled that the two students - third-year wrestler Jason Bernd and third-year rower Jennifer Blomberg - were ineligible after becoming aware of possible NCAA violations in late January. "I told the two coaches that the students were ineligible" from competing and practicing with the team, Mitchell said.

But much of their work goes into planning summer orientation sessions. Funlola Fagbohun, associate director of the first year experience, describes her experience working with OTP and how she strives to create a welcoming environment for first-years during orientation and beyond. Along with her role as associate director, summer Orientation leaders and OTP staff work continually to provide a safe and memorable experience for incoming students.
