Scholarship board discusses compliance

Two University Jefferson Scholars met Friday with the Alumni Association Board of Managers to discuss how to bring the scholarship program in compliance with NCAA regulations. Third-year wrestler Jason Bernd and third-year rower Jen Blomberg were suspended from competing with their varsity teams after the Virginia Athletic Department ruled the Jefferson Scholarship to be impermissible financial aid in late January. The scholarship was deemed non-compliant because it is run solely by the Jefferson Scholars foundation without oversight from the University Financial Aid Office.

Softball swats Jackets to vacate league cellar

The Virginia softball team moved out of last place in the ACC by winning both ends of a doubleheader against Georgia Tech in Atlanta Saturday. Temple taps Staley as women's hoops coach

Former Virginia women's basketball star Dawn Staley was named the new head women's basketball coach at Temple University yesterday. Staley, who played at Virginia from 1989 to 1992, led the Cavaliers to four NCAA Tournaments and three appearances in the Final Four.

Freshman QB duo waits behind Ellis

Nearly four months after he vowed to "reinvent the corporation" following a 63-21 debacle in the MicronPC.com Bowl, George Welsh quells any commotion that his promised overhaul will start with his quarterback. Dan Ellis remains his point man. The same can't be said for the backup job, where a pair of diametrically opposed freshmen candidates, strong-armed Matt Schaub and fleet-footed Bryson Spinner, are deadlocked in a duel to be the man.

Men's tennis duo hunts for wins

One year before Ronald Curry's infamous decision to attend North Carolina, it was Virginia that plucked two prominent tennis players from the Tar Heels' backyard. From 1996-1997, Huntley Montgomery and Brian Hunter starred for Chapel Hill High School's perennially powerful tennis team.

BLACKSBURG-It was a tale of two halves for the Virginia women's lacrosse team yesterday at Virginia Tech, featuring only the best of times. The Cavaliers put on a clinic at Rector Field House, defeating the Hokies 17-9.

CBS coverage feels too cheesy to be Masterful

This weekend I had an interesting idea for a new soap opera. It went something like this: Trapped in paradise, 50-some-odd anonymous white men, most stricken with pattern baldness and Gus Burger guts, a boy wonder named Tiger and a Fiji native exorcise life's frustrations by beating a little white ball senseless. I could already hear the cash register cha-chinging.

Freshman wrestler takes pair of titles

Freshman heavyweight wrestler Josh Etu took first place in both the University Greco-Roman and University Freestyle Championships at the 2000 University National Championships last weekend. By defeating Oregon State's Andy Bowlby, a top-10 Olympic prospect, for the Greco-Roman title, Etu became the first wrestler in Virginia history to win the University National Championships. Etu went on to best Ohio All-American Tim Courtad to take the freestyle title. Overall, Etu went 3-0 in Greco-Roman competition and 5-0 in freestyle matches in the tournament held at Northwestern University.

Women's lacrosse heads down right path

Now 12 games into the season, the Virginia women's lacrosse team is off to a fresh start. Before Saturday's win over Duke, the Cavs were 0-4 against top-10 teams and were left feeling that something was missing in their season.

Men's soccer signs quartet of recruits

After strong ACC and NCAA Tournament runs last year, Virginia men's soccer successfully courted and signed newcomers Alecko Eskandarian, Ryan Kelly, Jake LeBlanc and Matt Oliver for the 2000 season. Eskandarian, Kelly and LeBlanc will strengthen the midfield and forward positions, while Oliver will solidify the defense. Eskandarian and Kelly both honed their scoring skills playing high school soccer in New Jersey.

Driscoll finishes second to lead golfers to title

The No. 24 Virginia men's golf team won its first team title of the season over the weekend, edging East Tennessee State by two strokes in the Furman Intercollegiate competition in Greenville, S.C. Virginia senior James Driscoll tied Maryland's Keith Unikel for the tournament lead at seven under par (209) but lost on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

The phrase "defending champions" is especially appropriate for the 2000 Virginia men's lacrosse team, a squad that is making a strong run at another national title using a tough, experienced core of defensemen. "We have an experienced group," Cavalier coach Dom Starsia said.
