Scholarship board discusses compliance

Two University Jefferson Scholars met Friday with the Alumni Association Board of Managers to discuss how to bring the scholarship program in compliance with NCAA regulations. Third-year wrestler Jason Bernd and third-year rower Jen Blomberg were suspended from competing with their varsity teams after the Virginia Athletic Department ruled the Jefferson Scholarship to be impermissible financial aid in late January. The scholarship was deemed non-compliant because it is run solely by the Jefferson Scholars foundation without oversight from the University Financial Aid Office.

Freshman wrestler takes pair of titles

Freshman heavyweight wrestler Josh Etu took first place in both the University Greco-Roman and University Freestyle Championships at the 2000 University National Championships last weekend. By defeating Oregon State's Andy Bowlby, a top-10 Olympic prospect, for the Greco-Roman title, Etu became the first wrestler in Virginia history to win the University National Championships. Etu went on to best Ohio All-American Tim Courtad to take the freestyle title. Overall, Etu went 3-0 in Greco-Roman competition and 5-0 in freestyle matches in the tournament held at Northwestern University.

Men's soccer signs quartet of recruits

After strong ACC and NCAA Tournament runs last year, Virginia men's soccer successfully courted and signed newcomers Alecko Eskandarian, Ryan Kelly, Jake LeBlanc and Matt Oliver for the 2000 season. Eskandarian, Kelly and LeBlanc will strengthen the midfield and forward positions, while Oliver will solidify the defense. Eskandarian and Kelly both honed their scoring skills playing high school soccer in New Jersey.

Driscoll finishes second to lead golfers to title
