Basketball teams announce new recruiting classes

Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett announced Wednesday afternoon that the team had signed the bulky Brewster Academy senior forward Jarred Reuter to a National Letter of Intent. Earlier in the day, Virginia women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle also announced that high school senior post players Debra Ferguson, Moné Jones and Shakyna Payne would all head to Charlottesville for the 2015-16 season.

Women's basketball seeks first postseason appearance since 2012

The Virginia women’s basketball team opens its 2014-15 campaign this Friday night at John Paul Jones Arena against Ohio State, looking to improve on last season's 14-17 overall and 6-10 ACC record. The season was the first-ever losing effort in coach Joanne Boyle's 12 years at the collegiate level — none of her teams had ever finished fewer than two games above .500.

Cavaliers fall short against Georgia Tech, 77-76

The Virginia women’s basketball team bowed out of the ACC Tournament Thursday night in Greensboro, N.C. The No. 10 Cavaliers battled to the end against No. 7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets but came up just short in the end, falling 77-76.

Virginia tops Boston College in ACC Tournament, 74-59

Wednesday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C., the Virginia women’s basketball team defeated Boston College, 74-59, in the first round of the ACC Tournament. The 10th-seeded Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak to earn a second-round matchup with seventh-seeded Georgia Tech on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Women's basketball hosts Canes in home finale

The Virginia women’s basketball team plays its last home game of the season Thursday against Miami, as both teams aim to finish with winning records. The Cavaliers (13-14, 6-8 ACC) were one game above .500 last week before their matchup against two ranked ACC opponents, North Carolina and NC State.

Eagles clip Cavaliers late, 69-65

The Virginia women’s basketball team travelled to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for Thursday night’s matchup against Boston College having won four of five games. The Cavaliers, however, stumbled against the struggling Eagles, losing 69-65 after blowing a 15-point second half lead and coming up just short in a last-minute comeback.

Women’s basketball wins second straight, dominates Clemson 80-43

The Virginia women’s basketball team scrapped the suspense early Sunday afternoon against Clemson, reeling off 17 straight points to transform a one-point deficit with 15:19 to play in the first half into a 16-point lead with 11:37 to go. The Cavaliers carried their advantage into the break and then piled on the points in the second half to win 80-43.

Women's Basketball downs Wake Forest

The Virginia women’s basketball team scored a 64-59 victory against Wake Forest Thursday night in Winston Salem, N.C. to level their win and loss totals in ACC play. The Cavaliers built a 17-point lead midway through the second half, watched it all but disappear, and then iced the game by sinking five of six free throws in the final 29 seconds.

Virginia tops No. 6 Maryland, 86-72

With 30 seconds left in the second half Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena, Virginia senior guard Kelsey Wolfe held the ball near midcourt, her team up by 12 points and the pro-Cavalier crowd on its feet.

Women's basketball upsets No. 17 Florida State, 85-68

Randolph scored a career-high 26 points, and Virginia (9-9, 2-3 ACC) knocked down 10-of-19 shots from long-range to score its first win against a ranked team this season. Gerson held down the power forward position in the Cavalier’s small starting lineup, and she handed out assists — eight total — all game long.
