Swimmers take down Tobacco Road rivals
The Virginia swim and dive team swept its conference opponents in two dual meets this past weekend.
Swimming began Friday evening when the Cavalier men and women topped Duke in Durham, N.C. The No. 8 men's team defeated the Blue Devils 159-133, while the No. 11 women prevailed 157.5-127.5. Both the Virginia men's and women's teams set pool records in Durham: sophomore Lauren Smart in the 200 back, sophomore Joanna Thomas in the 400 individual medley, junior Scot Robison in the 200 freestyle and senior Garret Wren in the 1000 freestyle.
The next day, the Cavaliers won against both ranked North Carolina teams in Chapel Hill, N.C. The No. 14 Tar Heel men fell 168-132 to Virginia, while the No. 15 Tar Heel women lost 185-113 to the Cavaliers. The wins improved Virginia's total dual meet record to 7-1.
Virginia will take on Navy in Annapolis, Md. Friday at 1 p.m. and Pittsburgh at home Saturday at 4 p.m. Those two matchups conclude the dual meet season for the Cavaliers. ACC Championships begin Feb. 17 for the women and Feb. 24 for the men.
