Team falls in season finale
Despite milestone performances from two seniors, the Virginia volleyball team failed to finish its 2011 season with a victory against in-state rival Virginia Tech. The Hokies held off the upstart Cavaliers for a five-set victory, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 15-9 Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium.
Virginia (10-20, 4-16 ACC) honored its four seniors - outside hitter Simone Asque, middle Hillary Trebels, outside hitter Tess Udall and setter Beth Wildermuth - prior to the match, and by night's end two of the four had played their way into the Virginia record books.
Asque tallied a team-high 14 kills and moved into fourth place in program history with 1,442 career kills.
Wildermuth finished the game with 47 assists and boasts 2,020 assists for her career, becoming the sixth Virginia player to earn 2,000 career assists.
Freshman right side hitter Tori Janowski also recorded 12 kills and 12 digs to help the Cavaliers' cause against the Hokies (18-13, 11-9 ACC).
