The No. 12 Virginia women’s tennis team travelled down to Florida this weekend for two tough conference matches against No. 6 Miami and Florida State. The Cavaliers (11-7, 6-3 ACC) fell to Miami, 5-2, but bounced back to sweep Florida State, 4-0.
Against the Hurricanes, the Cavaliers lost the doubles point early on and never recovered in the singles matches. Virginia lost on courts two, three, four and six in singles.
Senior Julia Elbaba lost a tough match at number two, falling to Miami sophomore Sinead Lohan, 6-4, 7-6. The Cavaliers did, however, get an impressive win at the top of the ladder, with No. 4 singles player senior Danielle Collins defeating Miami’s No. 5 ranked singles player senior Stephanie Wagner, 7-6, 6-3. In the end, the Cavaliers didn’t have enough to get a win down in Coral Gables, Fla.
The team rebounded against lesser competition in Tallahassee, Fla., Sunday against Florida State. The Cavaliers won the doubles point and won at two, four and five on the singles ladder before the match was suspended as the Cavaliers’ 4-0 victory had already been decided.
Elbaba bounced back from a tough loss against Miami to get the Cavaliers their first singles victory when she beat Florida State senior Yukako Noi 6-4, 6-2. The match was later clinched when Virginia freshman Meghan Kelley defeated Seminole sophomore Lana Rush at number five on the ladder 6-1, 7-6.
This closes out Virginia’s road two-week road trip. The Cavaliers now look forward to returning to Charlottesville where they will take on Duke and Georgia Tech this weekend. Virginia hopes to take advantage of its home court and notch two much-needed ACC wins.
