Field hockey continues winning streak over Hoyas

The No. 5 field hockey team defeated Georgetown yesterday, 6-1, in the nation's capital.

The Cavs face off against No. 2 Old Dominion Sunday at 1 p.m. at Klockner Stadium. ODU has won the last four contests against the Cavs, with two of those losses coming from NCAA semifinals.

Tracy nets another honor

Third-year Katie Tracy was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept. 19 after netting two assists in the Cavaliers' upset of then-No. 9 Duke. It is the fourth time that Tracy has been named to the team in her career and the second time this season.

Tracy is also the current ACC Soccer Player of the Week.

Jones to Lead National Commodore Club

W. Blanton Jones has been named executive director of the National Commodore Club by Vanderbilt University Director of Athletics Todd Turner.

Jones goes to Vanderbilt after serving as an assistant director of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation, Virginia's athletics fundraising organization.

Jones also coordinated all donor benefits associated with the University's annual fund, including ticket allocations and reserved parking.

Ripken out for season with bad back

Earlier this season, Cal Ripken Jr. went on the disabled list for the first time. And now for the first time in his career, Ripken's season will be ending early.

Specialist Henry Bohlman of University Hospitals in Cleveland performed successful back surgery yesterday on Ripken. The surgery was meant to relieve pressure on a nerve that has been causing him pain, and will cause him to miss the final 12 games of the season for the Baltimore Orioles.

The surgery will also delay Ripken's pursuit of 3,000 hits. Ripken is currently nine hits shy of 3,000.

Ripken played in 2,632 straight games before voluntarily ending the streak last September. This season, however, he was placed on the disabled list twice because of back pain - the first two trips to the DL in a sensational career that began in 1981.

Morris named ACC's best

Maryland junior forward Terrance Morris was named a first-team preseason All-American and the preseason ACC Player of the Year by Athlon Sports. Last season, Morris averaged 15.3 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds.
