Jones, Isabelle claim ACC weekly honors

Two of the U.Va. football team's finest starters, tailback Thomas Jones and defensive lineman Yubrenal Isabelle, were named ACC Players of the Week for their respective positions after Virginia's 35-7 rout of Wake Forest Saturday.

Jones, a 5-10, 207-pound fourth year from Big Stone Gap, Va., led a formidable offensive attack for Virginia, rushing for 164 yards and posting three touchdowns - a personal career high - including touchdown runs from 15 and 12 yards out. His total yardage, with two receptions, reached 200 for the game.

Isabelle, a 6-1, 237-pound third year from Bluefield, W.Va., headed Virginia's defensive prowess Saturday with 10 tackles, including seven solos. Isabelle and the Virginia defense held Wake Forest to only 80 rushing yards during the match.

Tracy named ACC soccer Player of the Week

Third-year midfielder Katie Tracy was named the ACC Soccer Player of the Week, as she helped Virginia advance past two ACC opponents last week. Tracy posted two assists during the Cavaliers' 4-3 upset of Duke and scored one goal in Virginia's 3-1 triumph over N.C. State the next day. Tracy now leads the Cavaliers in scoring for the season with seven points.

The most recent ranking sets Virginia at No. 19 as the Cavaliers prepare for the Coca-Cola Classic tournament in Charlottesville Sept. 24-26.

University swimmers earn honors

Four Virginia swimmers were honored by USA Swimming for their outstanding performances last year. Ed Moses, a second year from Burke, Va., was named to the USA Swimming's 1999 All-Star team, USA Swimming's 1999 All-America team, and the 1999-2000 National 'A' Team.

Fourth-year Austin Ramirez and third-year Jamie Grimes were both selected to be on USA Swimming's 1999 All-America team. First-year Cara Lane was named on USA Swimming's 1999-2000 National 'B' team.

Moses' three honors come from his incredible feats in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke. His time of 1:00.99 in the 100-meter breaststroke set a Pan American Games record, and also ranks him No. 1 in the world. The USA Swimming All-America team includes 130 swimmers, both male and female.

Ramirez was selected to the team for the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:55.54, which marked the eighth fastest time of any American this year. Grimes earned the honor for his performance in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 1999 USA National Championships. His time marked the ninth best by any American during the year.

First-year sensation Cara Lane was selected to the 1999-2000 National 'B' team for winning the 1,500-meter free-style at the World University Games with a time of 16:32.04.

Dirty bird disaster

After a training camp holdout, Atlanta Falcon running back Jamal Anderson was the last player to arrive at the camp. But after a knee injury in Monday's game against Dallas, Anderson will be the first Falcon out for the season.

Anderson tore his anterior cruciate ligament on his third carry in the 24-7 loss. He took a handoff, attempted to cut to the left while still in the backfield and went down in obvious pain.

Anderson rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last three seasons.
