Women's tennis wins four finals in '99 opener

The Cavalier women's tennis team won three out of four singles divisions Sunday to make a solid showing at the three-day Wolfpack Invitational held at N.C. State. Third-year Leslie Cook and second-years Amy O'Donnell and Christine Kim all won titles in their respective divisions. Third-year Kelly Weaver and first-year Jennifer Tuchband combined to take one of the doubles divisions for the Cavs.

Men's golf tied for second after two rounds

After a second-place finish at the Ridges last week, the Cavalier men's golf team stayed near the top again, remaining tied for second with a combined score of two over par.

The Cavs, led by James Driscoll's opening rounds of 70 and 71, go into the final round of the Cavalier Classic looking to close the gap on front-runner Wake Forest. The Deacons, who hold a commanding 13-stroke team lead, look to be in solid position to take the tournament crown, but the Cavs could easily nab another runner-up title. The Classic concludes today at the Birdwood Golf Course.

Franks gets frank

Newly-hired Blue Devil head football coach Carl Franks has seen his team go without scoring a touchdown in the first two weeks of this young season. Franks, a former assistant of Steve Spurrier at Florida, has seen his team lose to East Carolina in a mistake-ridden game and then a heartbreaker in overtime to Northwestern in Saturday's contest.

Franks had been used to the lopsided offensive outputs that the Gators have to offer and told the Associated Press that "I've never quite been a part of anything like this. We've had opportunities, we've had chances, for some reason we just don't make the play."

His remarks come after a 45-yard rushing and 12-32 passing performance Saturday.

Rockies rebuild

Officials from the Colorado Rockies met Sunday with current Cleveland Indians executive Dan O'Dowd to finalize a deal which makes him the successor to recently departed General Manager Bob Gebhard. O'Dowd, who was the director of baseball operations and assistant general manager for the Indians from 1992-98, faces the challenge of rebuilding the franchise. While still a relatively young major league team, the Rockies have struggled mightily this season, posting a 67-83 record that leaves them dead last in the National League West.
