Crew team rows its way to Head of Ohio championship

The Virginia women's crew team captured the title at the Head of the Ohio Classic Saturday.

The Cavaliers' Open Eight tied defending national champion Brown University. Both teams crossed the line in 13:09.1, six seconds ahead of third-place Michigan.

The Cavaliers were also victorious in the Women's Open 4, the Open Quad, the Women's Double and in the Women's Single.

Cross Country places at Meet of Champions

Virginia third-year runner Jennifer Owens won the women's division at the Iona Meet of Champions by six seconds, with a time of 17:39.6, helping the Cavalier women take third place in Saturday's meet.

Her teammate, third-year Dana Coons, joined Owens in the top 10. Owens had an eight-place finish, with a time of 18:08.1.

On the men's side, third-year Bob Thiele finished in third place, to help the Cavaliers take seventh place at the meet. Thiele's time of 24:55.2 was just four seconds off of the first-place finish.

Field Hockey drops heartbreaker to Maryland

Although the No. 8 Virginia field hockey team held Maryland to only one shot in the second half, it lost to the No. 3 Terrapins 3-2 in College Park Saturday.

Fourth-year forward Meredith Elwell scored both goals for the Cavs. With those goals, she moved to eighth-place all-time in the ACC in goals scored with 61.

Maryland captured the lead early in the first half, off goals scored by Carissa Messimer and Molly Kauffman.

With time expired in the half, Maryland was awarded a penalty corner, which they converted to put the Terps up 3-0 at the break.

But the second half was all Cavaliers, as the defense limited the Terps to one shot, while the offense also got on track.

Elwell slammed in a pass from second-year forward/midfielder Carrie Goodloe halfway through the stanza. She scored her second goal of the afternoon at the 9:32 mark off a rebound by second-year midfielder Jessica Coleman.

Just before time expired, the Cavaliers were awarded a corner and the opportunity to send the game into overtime. But Coleman's shot was directed out of bounds and the Terrapins prevailed 3-2.

No. 15 Clemson stuns Virginia in overtime

After 90 minutes of scoreless play Saturday, the Virginia women's soccer team went to overtime against Clemson. It was the first time the Cavs have gone to overtime this season.

But after the first overtime period ended in a tie, the teams went one more round. Just four minutes into that stanza, Clemson's Rachel Gallegos scored the game-winner, helping the Tigers upset the Cavaliers 1-0. The loss gave Virginia its first ACC loss this year.

With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 7-3 and 3-1 in the ACC.

Golf sits in eighth place at Capital Classic

Virginia's Mike Mitchell fired the day's low round of 66 to help the Cavaliers finish eighth out of 15 teams in the Carpet Capital Classic at the Farm Golf Course in Dalton, Ga.

Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder shot 12-under-par for the tournament to capture individual honors and to lead the Yellow Jackets to the team title. Georgia Tech finished 12 strokes ahead of the second-place team, Clemson.

Mitchell led all Virginia golfers with rounds of 72-74-66. He tied for fifth place overall, and his four-under-par finish was a season-best performance.
