Stockton enters Trinity Hall of Fame

Virginia men's tennis coach Dick Stockton will be one of 10 people inducted into the Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame today.

Stockton capped a stellar career at Trinity by winning the NCAA Singles Championship and grabbing his fourth All-American selection as he led his team to an NCAA title in 1972. Stockton fashioned a 52-7 collegiate singles record and reached the 1971 NCAA Doubles final with teammate Bob McKinley, one of four other tennis players on this year's slate of Trinity Hall of Fame honorees.

Just five weeks ago, Stockton teamed with Tom Gullikson to capture his second career U.S. Open Men's Masters 45 and Over Doubles title. He is a member of the ITA Men's Tennis Collegiate Hall of Fame and the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame.

Beaters of the 'Pack

The Cavalier football team is off today, but four players have something to celebrate. Running back Thomas Jones, offensive tackle Brad Barnes, middle linebacker Yubrenal Isabelle and wide receiver Billy McMullen earned ACC weekly honors for their play in Virginia's 47-26 win at N.C. State last weekend.

Jones shared the Offensive Back of the Week accolades with Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler. The fourth-year tailback rushed for a career-high 221 yards and three touchdowns on 38 carries against the Wolfpack. Jones, who leads the nation with 1,109 rushing yards, has earned the award four times this year, more than any other player.

Barnes and Isabelle were named the Conference's Offensive and Defensive Linemen of the Week, respectively. Barnes, whose performance earned a grade of 91 from the Virginia coaching staff, helped the Virginia rushing attack gain 281 yards. Isabelle led the Cav defense with seven tackles -- all unassisted -- one fumble recovery and one interception, the first of his career.

McMullen grabbed the ACC Rookie of the Week award. His four receptions went for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Jersey girls

Michelle Vizzuso, who graduated from the University in May and now serves as a Cav assistant field hockey coach, was named the best player of the 20th century in her native New Jersey by the Newark Star-Ledger.

Vizzuso, a member of the U.S. National Team since 1994, was a four-time All-American during her Virginia career. She set numerous records during her time in Charlottesville and at West Essex High School.

Current Cavaliers Jessica Coleman and Meredith Elwell also earned spots on New Jersey's all-century team.
