And the winner is ...
Thanks to the Third-Year Council and Peace Frogs travel agency, third-year students Quincy Kolb and Sarah Witt spent this weekend in New Orleans.
Directly after winning the trip Thursday night, the two students were whisked away in a limousine to pack their bags.
After Kolb's raffle ticket was drawn, she chose Witt to accompany her on the all-expenses paid trip.
They were given accommodations in a hotel in Charlottesville to anticipate their Friday morning flight to Creole Country.
Organizers of the event said that 60 other prizes were awarded in addition to the trip.
But the real winner was United Support: The Community Foundation Against Domestic Violence and Abuse, which received all $2,600 raised at the event.
"We decided United Support would be our best choice because they are an up-and-coming charity in Charlottesville," Third-Year Council member Tony Rettig said. "We knew that the money would go directly to help victims instead of administrative and travel costs."
Confronting tradition
With the last home football game of the season less then a week away, members of the University community are once again asking students to question the fourth-year fifth tradition.
The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team, a peer education team in the Office of the Dean of Students, and the Institute for Substance Abuse Studies plan to sponsor events educating students about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse throughout the week.
As part of the Alcohol Awareness Steering Committee, ADAPT members said they worked with several other University organizations to plan events for the week that will encourage students to speak up if they see friends drinking irresponsibly.
"We are trying to teach people to break the cycle of enabling alcohol abuse, and to confront people they think have a problem," Awareness Committee Chairwoman Jill Ingram said.
The Awareness Committee also plans to give students an alternative to drinking before the football game with the fourth-year 5K and an alcohol-free tailgate with free food and prizes.
Tonight ADAPT will host a demonstration and discussion at 8 p.m. in Jefferson Hall to educate students about ways to stop alcohol abuse.
"We hope to stimulate thoughtful discussion, provide useful information and resources and promote healthy and smart decisions with respect to alcohol," said Alison Houser, Institute for Substance Abuse Studies director.
