Men swimmers start fast at ACCs

If the results of Thursday morning's preliminary races at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championship in North Carolina hold water, the No. 9 Virginia men's swimming and diving squad is living up to its billing as the favorite for its second consecutive ACC crown.

Senior Austin Ramirez finished three seconds ahead of fellow Cavalier junior Jamie Grimes for the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle. Ramirez's time also automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championship in the event. Junior Michael Fuller and freshman Mike Wheeler finished fifth and seventh respectively.

Senior Doak Finch barely edged out junior Chris Mousetis to win the 200 individual medley, setting a school record of 1:47.90 in the process. Virginia sophomore Ed Moses placed fifth in the 200 IM.

    Three's company

Newly-hired Virginia women's soccer team coach Steve Swanson has been chosen to head the U.S. women's under-18 soccer team. He joins Clemson co-head coach Tracey Leone and Jillian Ellis, the women's coach at UCLA, as coaches for the youth national teams. The three will be given the option to serve as assistant coaches with the U.S. women's national team and former Cavalier women's coach April Heinrichs.

    Never hurt a Canuck

After delivering a vicious two-handed slash to the right temple of Vancouver Canuck Donald Brashear Monday, Boston Bruin defenseman Marty McSorley was suspended for the rest of the NHL season, including the playoffs. The suspension, which will last at least 23 games, is the longest ever leveled by the commissioner's office for on-ice violence. Vancouver police are investigating the incident as well.
