American pie
Members of St. Elmo's Hall fraternity mixed a little patriotism into their bid day in a tradition that mixes both new and old.
Fraternity members welcomed new pledges with a giant American flag draped across their house, said Shep Campbell, third-year College student and St. Elmo's member.
"We do it every year," Campbell said. "All throughout rush there's this sense of patriotism."
Campbell said he remembered when he was a first year, it inspired and excited him as well.
"You don't really know what it means until you see this giant red, white and blue flag," he said. "It just kind of evokes a good feeling inside you."
St. Elmo's nine pledges not only saw the flag, but heard Jimi Hendrix's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as they came to the House as pledges for the first time.
Campbell said he helped hang the flag this year as well.
"It just all culminates in this big dropping of the flag off the roof of the house," he said. "It's a day everybody gets together -- one of the few times we are all unified."
