Swanson gets nod as new Cav women's soccer coach

Steve Swanson was named head coach of the Virginia women's soccer team yesterday, four weeks after former coach April Heinrichs left the Cavalier program to take the helm of the U.S. women's national team.

Swanson spent the last four years as the head man at Stanford. He built the Darmouth program from the ground up in his six years with the Big Green.

A class of their own

Virginia offensive guard Noel LaMontagne, defensive back Dwayne Stukes and quarterback Dan Ellis were named to the 1999 All-ACC Academic football team Wednesday. Players must receive either a 3.0 grade point average for the fall semester or a 3.0 cumulative average throughout their academic career in order to be eligible.

    The ACC stands as the top conference in the Conference Power Index (CPI) for men's basketball, which measures the relative strength of conferences. The ACC boasts two teams in the Top 25: third-ranked Duke and No. 23 Maryland. The SEC is ranked second in the CPI. The Pac-10, Big Ten and Big East conferences complete the top five.

    Griffey dealt to Reds

    Ken Griffey Jr. finally got his wish yesterday, as the Seattle Mariners completed a deal with the Cincinnati Reds that sent the All-Star center fielder to his Ohio hometown.

    The Reds, who gave up center fielder Mike Cameron, pitcher Brett Tomko and a pair of minor leaguers, signed Griffey to a new nine-year contract worth $117.5 million, according to ESPN.
