At NCAAs, medley relay finishes fourth

In the first of three days of competition, the No. 7 Virginia men's swimming team began the 2000 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with strong performances from its 400-meter medley relay team and senior Austin Ramirez.

The medley foursome of sophomores Chris Mousetis and Ed Moses, junior Troy Johnson and senior Doak Finch finished fourth with a time of 3:33.47.

Ramirez swam a 3:47.76 in the 400 freestyle to take eighth. The finish earns the Brookfield, Wisc. native first-team All-American recognition.

The Cavaliers are tied for 13th place after six events. Texas is the leader with 173 points.

The Virginia men's tennis team (9-2) looks to continue its winning ways Saturday against Wake Forest (5-5). Matches begin at Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The Cavs then face ACC-rival Florida State (9-5) Sunday at 1 p.m.

The No. 26 Cavaliers dropped their second meet of the season to No. 36 Notre Dame in the first round of the Blue-Gray National Classic Mar. 16.

    Crew rows on

The Virginia crew team continues its quest for a national championship Saturday against Ohio State and Michigan in Raleigh, N.C.

Both the Cavaliers (1-0) and the Buckeyes (1-0) have been tested in competition this spring, but this will be Michigan's first race of the season. Virginia won two races over San Diego State last Saturday, while Ohio State was handily defeating the Dayton Flyers, taking all five races held.

    Volleyball craftiness

Virginia volleyball added a fifth recruit to its already promising 2000 roster by signing Whitney Ashcraft of Yorktown, Ind.

Ashcraft, an outside hitter and middle back, was a three-year starter at nationally ranked Burris High School. She collected Indiana All-State awards in 1997 and 1999. The 5-foot-9 defensive specialist will immediately provide depth to a team that went 19-12 overall last season and fell to Arizona in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
