Campaign passes $1.1 billion mark

In addition to surpassing the University's $1 billion Capital Campaign goal in December, funds grew by another $8.58 million in February, bringing the Campaign total to $1.103 billion.

According to totals as of Feb. 29, $978.5 million of the funds are in the form of gifts and pledges and $124.9 million is from bequests and other future support.

February's total is on par with the average amount raised each month during the campaign, Vice President for Development Robert Sweeney said.

"The Campaign averages about $8-$10 million a month. January and February tend to be on the leaner side because of the tax year ending in December," Sweeney said.

February's donations boost the total for the last 12 months to $251 million. Sweeney said he anticipates another surge of donations near the end of the school year.

Fundraisers predict the University will continue raising about $10 million per month until the Campaign officially ends on December 31, 2000, he said.

Each school in the University is on course to meet or exceed its individual goal, he added. The College now has raised a total of $121 million, the Darden School has raised $191 million, the Law School has raised $122 million and the Health System has raised $198 million.

The Campaign's success can be traced to several factors, Sweeney said.

The Development Office has communicated to contributors that the Commonwealth's funds will not cover all the University's expenditures. Also, the University has obtained a number of large donations that significantly boost the Campaign total, Sweeney said.

He said the Campaign's success also can be attributed to great volunteer leadership and a president that is adept at fundraising.

Assoc. Vice President of Development Charles Fitzgerald said strong rapport between fundraisers and alumni of the University also have added to the Campaign's success.

"The combination of a wonderful institution that is highly regarded by alumni and friends, a strong economy and the hard work of volunteers, faculty and staff" has bolstered the Campaign, Fitzgerald said.

The Office of Development now is outlining fundraising plans for the next five years, he said.

The Campaign was launched in 1995 with an original goal of $750 million.
