Honor forms new Alumni Advisory Group

In order to facilitate dialogue between past and current Committee members, the Honor Committee is creating a formal Alumni Advisory Group that will meet twice each year to advise the Committee on constitutional and operational concerns.

Committee Chairman Hunter Ferguson brought this proposal to the Committee last week as a replacement for the former Old Chair's Conference. Under the Old Chair's Conference, former Committee chairmen attended a yearly meeting and offered guidance based on past experience with the honor system.

The Committee passed the proposal Sunday.

The new Alumni Advisory Group will be different from its predecessor in a number of ways. The Committee will appoint nine to 12 Committee members to serve three-year terms on the Group. These terms will rotate so the Committee will appoint 3 new members each year. The Group will be open to any former Committee members, not just Committee chairmen.

It is designed to draw Committee alumni who possess "strong personal ties to the system," Ferguson said.

The Group will meet twice a year - once in the fall and again in the spring when the new Committee is elected. The Group also may meet throughout the year at the Committee's request.

The Committee now is in the process of selecting past Committee members who will be offered positions in the Group. Ferguson said the Committee hopes to have nine members in the Group by April.

"The Alumni Advisory Group will be a great resource for future Committees," he said. "They will be an available and familiar group of people whom the Committee can turn to" when it has questions.

The Group will act as a supportive body to the Committee, he added. "They will also be another advocate for the Honor Committee" when the Committee has problems with the administration, Ferguson said.

The resolution received unanimous support from the Committee. Committee members-elect also have expressed enthusiasm for the Group.

Honor Committee member-elect Thomas Hall said he is pleased with the creation of the new Group. He said there are problems with Committee turnover from year to year because of a lack of continuity on the Committee.

The Group will provide the Committee "with an institutional memory ... this group will be a resource for all Committee members to turn to" throughout the year, Hall said.

Scott Sottile, Committee Architecture rep. who has been re-elected to another term, said he agrees that the Group will be a great resource.

The Group will help guide the Committee on perennial issues such as Board of Visitors concerns, case handling and issues not expressly written out in the Committee's bylaws, he said.
