Meridian to use newly found Borges poetry

Jorge Luis Borges, renowned for his impressive short stories and poems as well as the impact he had on his contemporaries, has emerged in the form of previously unpublished poems on the pages of Meridian, a University literary journal.

Meridian has unearthed two poems by the famous Argentine poet, who died in 1986. Borges' work is laden with complex labyrinth imagery, like in his short story "The Garden of Forking Paths."

The collection's founding curator, Jared Loewenstein, translated one of the unpublished poems, "Villa Mazzini," from Spanish to English. Because Borges tried to destroy his early work, this poem is particularly valuable.

As Loewenstein explained, the poem demonstrates Borges' early activities in the "Ultraism" movement, characterized by its use of free verse, complicated metrical innovations and daring imagery and symbolism. Though Borges later rejected it, his early work with this modernist style, as revealed in this poem, discloses the roots of his thinking.

The second poem, "A Mi Padre," or "To My Father," is particularly notable because it is completely different from the published work of "To My Father," written one year after Borges' father's death. This original work is much more revealing of Borges' true feelings toward his father.

Meridian, a semi-annual publication, showcases both emerging writers from the University's graduate creative writing program as well as significant works by well-known authors. The Borges poems are part of the "Lost Classics" section, devoted to unearthing unpublished work by famous writers.

The University's Alderman Library boasts the largest Borges collection in the world. According to Loewenstein, the curator of the collection, the impact of Borges' work cannot be understated.

Borges' wide variety of work is famous for its clarity and density, as Borges' work "raised the standard for short stories in its sophistication," Lowenstein said.

The poems, published in both the original Spanish version as well as the translated English version, mark different periods in the writer's development.

Meridian, which was started in March 1998, has had enormous success in showcasing emerging writers.
