Crew breezes to San Diego Classic victory

The Virginia women's crew team continued to succeed against some of the nation's best competition Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic.

The Cavaliers won the championship in the second varsity eight competition with a time of 6:39.5. Washington finished second and Michigan placed third.

The Virginia varsity eight finished third in its race, eight seconds behind first-place Washington. Cal-Berkeley also finished ahead of Virginia, which turned in a time of 6:46.2.

The Cavaliers compete next at the George Washington Invitational April 15.

Eye of the Tiger

The Virginia men's tennis team lost Sunday at Clemson, as the Tigers won all three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches.

Cav juniors Brian Vahaly and Brian Hunter won singles matches at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.

The Cavaliers (12-5, 2-2 ACC) return to action today at Maryland.

West-side story

Virginia point guard Renee Robinson had five points and three steals in 17 minutes in Saturday's Women's Basketball Coaches Association Collegiate All-Star Game.

  • Robinson, a native of East Palo Alto, Calif., was one of 20 top seniors who competed.

    Robinson's West squad lost to the East All-Stars, 73-58.

    Sage swimmer

    Cavalier swimmer Emily Carrig was named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-District III Women's University Fall/Winter At-Large Second Team.

    Carrig, a fourth-year chemistry major, was selected to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in each of her first three years. She also has been on the Virginia Academic Athletic Honor Roll every semester and is a lifetime member of the National Honor Society.

    Carrig, a four-time All-American, is a former Cavalier record holder in the 200-yard butterfly.

    Schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia comprise District III. Athletes from cross country, gymnastics, skiing, soccer, swimming, rifle, field hockey and fencing are eligible for the Fall/Winter At-Large Team.

    NCAA title returns to Storrs

    The Connecticut women's basketball team won its second NCAA Championship with a 71-53 win over Tennessee Sunday.

    Huskies guard Shea Ralph was named the Final Four's Most Valuable Player.
