Mugger nabs student's bag near Culbreth

A female University graduate student was mugged Saturday afternoon on Culbreth Road, near the Culbreth theatre.

University Police Capt. Michael Coleman said that at 4:10 p.m. July 8, a man ran up behind the student and grabbed her briefcase.

"She didn't let go, but he pulled on it hard enough to pull her down onto the grass and drag her a little," Coleman said.

The victim told police she shouted for help, but no one came to her aid. The suspect succeeded in taking the briefcase away from the woman.

Coleman said a case like this usually would be classified as a "purse snatching" - which is when someone intends to rob someone without harming them - but this is classified as a "strong-armed robbery" because the victim held onto her briefcase and resisted the attacker.

University Police Sgt. Cassandra Carter said they are now questioning a witness in the crime.

Carter said there also were people playing soccer on nearby Carr's Hill Field, but that no one else witnessed the crime.

Carter said the assailant was a dark-skinned black male with facial hair, about 6 feet tall, between 25 and 30 years old and was wearing a white tank top and khaki shorts.

The victim told the police the assailant appeared to be jogging before he took her briefcase.

The victim lost some personal effects that were in her briefcase and about $132.

Carter said the police still are investigating the case, and have no suspects.

Strong-armed robbery is a Class 5 felony and can be punished with up to two years in jail or a $2,500 fine, Carter said.

Carter said anyone "having any knowledge about the crime" should call Crimestoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
