Driscoll takes second at U.S. Amateur

After 39 holes of lost opportunities and dramatic comebacks, 2000 Virginia grad James Driscoll fell to Arizona State's Jeff Quinney in the championship match of the 100th U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament Monday.

Driscoll came back from a three-hole deficit with three holes to play Sunday, but thunderstorms stalled his comeback. The match continued Monday morning, but three holes and nine minutes into the day, Quinney sank a 30-foot putt to win the championship.

The match tied the 1950 record for the longest U.S. Amateur championship match ever.

Women's soccer starts strong

Off to a bright start, the No. 16 Cavalier women's soccer team opened Steve Swanson's Virginia coaching career by dealing No. 13 William and Mary a 3-0 loss in its season opener in Williamsburg Saturday.

In the 18th minute, center midfielder Katie Tracy headed in an Ashley Meeker corner kick for the first goal.

Virginia midfielder Erin Englehardt scored in the 55th minute of her first collegiate game. Forward Darci Borski scored off a Tribe turnover in the 70th minute to seal the Cav victory.

Men's soccer ties exhibition games

The Cavalier men's soccer team wrapped up the preseason with back-to-back ties in exhibitions with Georgetown and St. John's last weekend in College Park, Md.

Although they outshot Georgetown by 16 shots Friday, the Cavs could not convert any opportunities, including a close header from forward Sheldon Barnes in the first half, and the game ended in a scoreless tie. Virginia midfielder Steve Totten scored against the Red Storm Saturday, but St. John's pulled out a goal in the 81st minute to tie it at one.

Virginia begins the regular season Friday against the South Florida Bulls at 7:30 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.

2001 football will open in Wisconsin

In the first-ever meeting of the two schools, Virginia will face Wisconsin in the Eddie G. Robinson Football Classic in Madison, Wisc., to start the 2001 season.

The Cavaliers' non-conference opponents next year also include Penn State and Virginia Tech, in addition to eight ACC games. Coach George Welsh has indicated the Cavs will play Syracuse and South Carolina in the next few years.

The 2000 Classic between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech was cancelled because of lightning Sunday. The Eddie G. Robinson Foundation provides scholarships and aid to college-bound students.

Jones to start for Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals coach Vince Tobin decided to go with his gut and start 2000 Virginia graduate Thomas Jones in Saturday's season opener against the New York Giants.

Jones was the No. 7 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft and replaces Michael Pittman, who started all four preseason games. Tobin said Jones' progress in training camp and in the preseason earned him the job as the primary back.
