Fowler selected as new leader of Wolfpack sports

N.C. State University Chancellor Marye Anne Fox selected Lee Fowler as the new athletics director, ending an intensive search. Fowler, formerly the athletics director at Middle Tennessee State, was picked over Bobby Purcell, executive director of the Wolfpack Club. Purcell had the support of influential trustee Wendell Murphy and the Wolfpack faithful.

But Fowler's experience at Middle Tennessee State was one of his best selling points. He brought the football squad to Division I-A status, and under his leadership, the school won the all-sports trophy in the Ohio Valley Conference five years in a row. Fowler also is a strong fundraiser, Fox said, a man of good character and a possible chairman for the 2002 NCAA Basketball committee.

    Terrapin QB finalized?

Maryland coach Ron Vanderlinden finally decided on his starting quarterback for the team's opener against Temple Saturday, but he's keeping his mouth shut for now. The Baltimore Sun reported yesterday that signs points towards redshirt sophomore Calvin McCall, getting the nod, with junior Shaun Hill seeing time off the bench.

Hill, a junior college transfer in the Dan Ellis-drop-back passer mold, was neck-and-neck with McCall in a race for the starting job. An all-around athlete who also plays on the Terps basketball team, McCall both can run and work the option. Virginia plays Maryland Oct. 7 at Scott Stadium.
