Vice President and Provost Peter Low and other administrators have selected the 12 men and women who are in charge of finding a suitable replacement for Law School Dean Robert E. Scott, who plans to step down from his post July 1 of next year.
Law professor George Rutherglen will chair the committee. Other committee members are Darden professor Robert S. Harris; Law School professors Alex M. Johnson Jr., Michael J. Klarman, Jennifer L. Mnooken, Clarisa Long, James E. Ryan, John C. Harrison and Paul G. Mahoney; former Law School dean Richard A. Merrill; third-year Law student Brendan V. Johnson and James L. Malone III, a Law School alumnus.
Although the field will not be narrowed down to a set number of candidates, the committee will be working collectively to find a replacement by the end of the semester. The committee will consider candidates from both the University and other law schools.
"Three things are being taken into consideration when reviewing and searching for possible candidates: outstanding reputation as a legal scholar, experience and interest in law school administration, and a commitment to the University of Virginia," Chairman Rutherglen said.
But that is not all the committee is looking for.
Professor Mahoney added that the replacement would have to "aggressively recruit the best faculty ... and continue to strive to make the Law school one of the very best in the country."
Professor Klarman summed up his hopes by saying, "If we could clone Dean Scott, that would be perfect."
An advertisement for the position has been sent to the Office of Equal Opportunities Programs, and, pending approval, then will be posted and sent to universities and other institutions around the nation. Members of the committee and the faculty also plan to contact other law schools in hopes of finding the perfect candidate.
