Nine students receive Miller Center grants

A common worry for many students pursuing graduate studies is how to make ends meet as they write dissertations and work on research projects. However, nine students can stop worrying.

The Miller Center of Public Affairs selected these students -- three from the University -- to receive a $15,000 inaugural fellowship.

Center officials, who established the fellowship a year ago, chose the students out of 120 applicants nationwide based on scholarly superiority and "quality of the mind," said Center presidential scholar and co-director Sidney M. Milkis.

Brian Balogh, who co-directs the program with Milkis, said it is "not coincidence" that one third of the recipients of the fellowship are from the University.

"There will always be a disproportionate number of University students. We have one of the top departments," Balogh said.

Milkis said the strength of the University's program contributes to University students' success in receiving the fellowships.

"We want to establish this as a national program, yet we love U.Va. and want to make sure the students benefit," he said. "Of course, we do want to also make it clear that the students from here are outstanding."

Lorraine K. Gates, Paul C. Milazzo and Joshua Dunn are the graduate students from the University who received the fellowships.

For Joshua Dunn, the money will allow him the freedom to work exclusively on his dissertation without having to work as a graduate advisor or teaching assistant. His research involves the impact of court rulings on urban educational policies in Kansas City.

Milkis prompted Dunn to apply for the fellowship.

"I hope I was chosen because [the committee] was confident I can do good work," Dunn said.

Milazzo and Gates could not be reached for comment.
