After reaching the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons, the Cavalier women's volleyball team has experienced a frustrating first 20 games this year. Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, Virginia dropped two games under .500 with a lengthy 3-0 loss (15-7, 15-13, 18-16) to North Carolina.

Tar Heel sophomore Laura Greene posted match-highs with 18 kills and 16 digs to help UNC (18-4, 8-1 ACC) sweep Cavs (9-11, 4-5). Carolina freshman outside hitter Nicole Reis chipped in 18 kills in just two games.
Virginia middle blocker Deanna Zwarich continued her stellar senior season, leading the Cavaliers with 17 kills. Redshirt junior Jenny Harmon (11 kills, 10 digs) and freshman Paige Davis (10 kills, 13 digs) recorded double-doubles.
The Cavs, who have not played at home since their Oct. 7 loss to Carolina, remain on the road for their fourth and fifth consecutive away matches this weekend. Virginia faces N.C. State in Raleigh Friday night and plays Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Saturday.
Running to the top
For the first time in five years, the Cav women's cross country team is ranked in the Top 25. After placing 17th out of 56 teams at Pre-Nationals Saturday, Virginia snuck into the national rankings at No. 25.
Brigham Young easily earned the No. 1 spot with all 12 first-place votes. Two other ACC teams made the list as well: N.C. State (13th) and Wake Forest (23rd).
The Virginia men and women will race next in the ACC Cross Country Championships Oct. 28 in Raleigh.
Hoo wears the green and white
Bryant Stith, one of the best players in Cavalier basketball history, was traded from the Denver Nuggets to the Boston Celtics in a four-player deal Monday.
Stith, 29, was drafted 13th overall by the Nuggets in 1992 after leading the Cavs to three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 1992 National Invitation Tournament title. The 6-foot-5 guard finished his Virginia career as the leading scorer and second-leading rebounder in program history. He is one of six former Cavaliers to have his jersey number retired.
Stith went to the Celtics with guard Chris Herren, a Boston native, in exchange for guard Robert Pack and forward Calbert Cheaney.
