MTV invasion
Cut from the Real World auditions? Today will be your chance to score a few seconds of airtime on MTV as yourself, a University student, without having to live with six complete strangers.
MTV invades Grounds today, armed with cameras and a crew team to record students' opinions about college life.
MTV will be filming before and after the Wyclef and De La Soul concert tonight in U-Hall, sponsored by the University Programs Council (UPC).
"We definitely went after them," third-year College student Jbeau Lewis said of bringing MTV to Grounds. Lewis is the Program Director for PK German, a subcommittee of UPC.
Candid shots and random interviews will also take place in the MTV Interactive Village set up in the Mad Bowl from 12 to 5 p.m.
The six tents in the Mad Bowl are there to promote music and social awareness, each with its own theme. Inside the "rock" tent, students can jam on a drum kit or keyboard, as their music is edited into a music video.
The hip-hop tent revolves around MTV's new show "Direct Effect," similar to "TRL" in that it takes callers' requests for videos, but will focus more on hip-hop than pop music. Tec, a former Real World cast member, will be the host of "Direct Effect."
A pro-social tent houses the Rock the Vote campaign and addresses issues such as hate crimes.
The interviews and camera shots will be compiled into a half-hour special that will air Mon., Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. on MTV. The show is being filmed to promote the fifth season of MTV's Campus Invasion tour.
"They have a hot lineup of acts," Lewis said. "It's a chance to get our name out there nationally."
