Lane, Moses swim to victory at World Cup

Wednesday was a big day for Cavalier women's athletics, most notably sophomore swimmer Cara Lane, who won the 800-meter freestyle at the 2000 FINA World Cup in College Park, Md.

Former Virginia swimmer Ed Moses, who gave up his NCAA eligibility but will return as a student in the spring, won the 50 and 200 breaststrokes in his first competition since winning a pair of Olympic medals in Sydney.

Cavalier freshman Amy Baly and senior Megan Iffland also posted top-eight finishes in the first day of competition.

  • When the Virginia women's volleyball team opens the ACC Tournament tonight against Wake Forest, it will be led by an All-ACC honoree. Senior middle blocker Deanna Zwarich was selected to the first team Wednesday.

Zwarich has been spiking Virginia kills records left and right this season, breaking the marks for single match, single season and career kills. She leads the ACC with 531 kills and is second in the conference with 132 blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Paige Davis was named to the All-Freshman Team. Zwarich is the only Cavalier with more kills and digs than Davis this season.

    Southern comfort

After getting bounced from the NCAA Tournament in the first round last weekend, five Cavalier field hockey players were named to the All-South Regional teams, with two selected for first-team recognition.

Cavalier goalie Becky Worthington was chosen for the first team along with fellow senior Lorraine Vizzuso. Worthington has been selected for the ACC All-Tournament team three times, and her career goals-against average ranks seventh all-time at Virginia. This is Vizzuso's fourth selection to the All-South team at forward. She was also selected for All-ACC honors last year.

The Cavs on the second team are junior midfielder Jessica Coleman, junior forward Carrie Goodloe and senior back Julia Richardson.

    Hooping it up

The No. 25 Virginia men's basketball team opens the regular season tonight at 7:30 p.m. at University Hall against Long Island.

In addition, the Cavaliers announced Wednesday received letters of intent from four 2001-02 recruits: 6-8 power forward Elton Brown, 6-7 forward Jason Clark, 6-3 guard Jermaine Harper and 6-3 point guard Keith Jenifer.

The Cav women's basketball team is in action as well this weekend. No. 13 Virginia will face No. 8 Louisiana Tech in West Lafayette, Ind., Sunday in the Final Four of the preseason National Invitation Tournament.
