Men's basketball derails Boilermakers

The expression on Gene Keady's face told the whole story.

Late in the second half of last night's men's basketball game between Virginia and Purdue, Cavalier point guard Donald Hand missed the first free throw of a one-and-one, but, Purdue's players stood motionless, and Hand came off the line undeterred to put in his own miss. Standing stock still on the sideline with arms crossed, mouth pursed, face redder than hot coals fueling a boiler, the Purdue men's basketball coach appeared to be on the brink of exploding.

He had good reason to be mad. In its first big out-of-conference game, the No. 21 Virginia men's basketball team (4-0) scored an impressive 98-79 win over the Boilermakers yesterday night (1-2) in the second annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

"Our kids played right into their hands," Keady said. "We let them run their offense. They didn't let us run ours."

Lauren Seeliger and Brandon Kile, two third-year Cavalier Daily News writers, discuss the impact of the student housing frenzy on both University students and the Charlottesville community.
