BLACKSBURG-It was rough, rowdy and more than a little ugly. But the Virginia men's basketball team made it work nonetheless Friday night against Virginia Tech.
The Cavaliers (3-0), who rang up 96 and 117 points in their first two games, barely broke a sweat in their 64-48 victory over the Hokies (1-2).
"It wasn't a Picasso or a Monet or a Van Gogh or a Cezanne," Virginia coach Pete Gillen said. "But it was a great win."
The Cavaliers used a pair of runs sandwiched around two Hokie three-pointers to effectively put the game away before halftime. Behind outside shooting from senior guard Keith Friel and inside banging from sophomore center Travis Watson, the Cavs stretched their lead from 13-10 to 32-16 during a five-minute stretch.
Friel led the Cavaliers with 15 points, his highest total since transferring from Notre Dame, on 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range. His outburst coincided with 18 minutes of playing time, one of the longest outings of his career.
