Leadership center opens doors

The Leadership Resource Center opened its doors yesterday, encouraging both experienced and new leaders to take advantage of the University's newest assets.

The new resource center will "provide students with the tools to become a good leader," Asst. Dean of Students Stephanie Goodell said.

The LRC, located in the University Programs Office in Newcomb Hall, provides information on leadership skills and conducting an efficient meeting, books written by leadership experts, leadership videos, and information about clubs and organizations around Grounds.

"We're starting as a library but plan to expand, providing workshops and seminars for interested students," University Programs Director Jennifer Monges said.

The LRC is a meeting place for student leaders to devise a plan for improving the quality of their programs. Members will have access to a computer, copier and extensive leadership materials.

"We wanted to put the center in the middle of things," said Dean of Students Penny Rue regarding the center's prime location on the first floor of Newcomb Hall.

The Parent's Program gave the center initiative $4,000 last year during Parent's Weekend.

Coupled with funds from the Office of the Dean of Students and Newcomb Hall, the LRC purchased leadership-based materials and student-requested literature.

  • "The resource center will provide information on the many facets of leadership, such as running a meeting and time management," said Meagan Smith, the LRC's new student supervisor in charge of outreach.

David Turner, the former student supervisor of the LRC, helped devise a catalog and checkout system for the new center.

The idea for a learning resource center began with Rue more than a year ago. Rue worked closely with students at similar resource centers at Georgetown University and the University of Maryland.

The University of Buffalo and the University of North Carolina also have similar resource centers for their student leaders.

"This should be a selling point for the University," Goodell said.

Goodell said she plans to meet next week with the University Guide Service to encourage guides to highlight Newcomb Hall's newest addition on their tours around Grounds.

"We think that the resource center can help all types of students," said Rue.
