With Virginia statewide elections drawing near, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark R. Warner contributed $3.85 million from his own pocket to his campaign this month. Warner's contributions to his campaign now total $4.4 million.
With the help of his contributions, Warner was able to break Virginia's fund-raising records for gubernatorial campaigns.
His funds also have helped him maintain a steady lead in advertisements over his Republican competitor, Mark L. Earley.
Earley is well behind Warner in fund-raising totals. Earley raised $10.5 million through Oct. 24. At least $3.4 million was given to the campaign by state and national Republican party sources.
In this same time period, Warner raised $18.2 million, with more than 15,000 individual donors contributing.
President George W. Bush gave Earley a push by sending out hundreds of thousands of copies of letters to Virginians. The letters urged residents to support Earley.
In the past few days, Republicans have resurrected attacks on Warner, accusing him of trying to buy his campaign with his self-funded advertisements.
"It's hard for the guy who lives on Main Street, USA to compete against the guy who lives on Madison Avenue," said Christopher J. LaCivita, a senior Earley consultant, in a recent Washington Post article.
Warner campaign manager Steve Jarding responded saying that the Warner campaign needed his personal funds to compensate for the national contributions Republicans are receiving.
"It seems like someone's buying the race ... and they're not even Virginians," said Jarding in the Post article.
Warner raised several million dollars more than Earley even without his personal contribution.
