Former Michigan State standout dies in California

Brian Ottney, a captain and center for Michigan State last year, died early Monday morning in California.Paramedics found Ottney, 23, unresponsive when they arrived at the Long Beach, California residence where Ottney collapsed.

Ottney was taken to Long Beach Community Hospital where he pronounced dead at 12:59 a.m.The cause of death will not be known until the return of autopsy and toxicology reports.Ottney, who graduated with a degree in building construction management, was engaged to be married.

"There was not a tougher guy on the team," former Michigan State coach Bobby Williams said. "His big heart will be one great quality about him that I will remember."Ottney was a three-year letter winner for the Spartans and started 33 consecutive games.
