Despite outshooting their opponents by a combined 42-15 in two games this weekend, the Cavaliers emerged with only a tie and a loss to show for their efforts.
Ohio State downed the No. 8 Virginia squad, 1-0, Friday on a breakaway goal by Buckeye forward Colleen Hoban in the first half. Virginia kept up a relentless attack throughout the game, racking up 12 second-half shots. None of them, however, found the back of the goal, leaving the Cavs with a disappointing loss.
Sunday, the Cavaliers struck early on a goal by sophomore midfielder Kelly Hammond in the seventh minute. However, the lead failed to stand up, as Dayton struck back just before halftime to tie the score.
After an early second-half lull, the Virginia offense came back to life with several good chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but Friday's luck continued and the Cavaliers were forced to settle for a tie. U.Va. (2-1-1) is idle until Friday, when they host Santa Clara at 7 p.m. in their opening game of the Virginia Soccer Classic.
