Ohio Attorney General calls for more bars near campuses

Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro is advocating for a reduced drinking age and an increase in public drinking areas available to students.

Petro blames frequent riots in the Ohio State University area on the dearth of near-campus drinking establishments. He claims this inadequacy leads students to crowd into house parties which often get out of control.

Some say, however, that making alcohol more available to students is not the answer. University and community groups are joining forces to reduce crime associated with student drinking.

These groups are working to increase patrolling efforts between Columbus Police and its University Police. To that end police funding has been increased by $25,000 and there is a plan to build a police substation south of campus.
