Competing individually this past Saturday in the 2004 Cleveland State Open, three Virginia wrestlers compiled an 8-4 record in the 165-pound weight class.
Junior Will Durkee took first place in the division, going 4-0 with victories over Maryland, Central Michigan and Indiana wrestlers.
In capturing the title, No. 1 seeded Durkee defeated No. 4 seeded Tim Scarl of Indiana in the semifinals by a score of 1-0 and No. 2 seeded Brad Anderson of Central Michigan in the finals, 7-1.
Along with Durkee, freshman Damian Johnson amassed a 3-2 record, losing only his first and final matches of the competition. Sophomore Conor Manley rounded out the trio of wrestlers, finishing with a record of 1-2.
The three competitors will rejoin their teammates this Saturday when the Cavaliers host Kent State, Old Dominion, and Virginia Tech in Memorial Gymnasium. Scheduled to begin at noon, the quad-meet will be the team's second opportunity of the season to compete in front of a home crowd.
