In an effort to aid sleep-deprived students, Duke University announced that it will discontinue 8 a.m. classes beginning next fall, according to the Associated Press.
The initiative is part of an overall effort to encourage healthy sleep habits among college students who average six to seven hours of sleep. National surveys report that students averaged seven to seven and a half in the 1980s, the AP reported.
Duke is also considering orientation programs offered to new students that stress the importance of sufficient sleep and individual health assessments for students to set goals regarding overall wellness, according to CNN.com.
Currently, Duke's 8 a.m. classes have been so ill-attended that many departments have stopped offering them.
Duke administrators have developed a new schedule for the fall that will spread classes more evenly throughout the day and week, CNN.com reported.
Duke will continue to offer 8:30 a.m. courses.
