Link, Blair win USFHA National Championship Playing for the Maryland Thundersticks, Virginia field hockey players Katherine Blair and Mia Link (pictured at left) won the USFHA National Championship Tuesday with a 4-2 victory over the South. Blair recorded nine saves in goal for Maryland.
In the bronze medal game, Virginia assistant coach Alexandra Kyser made an overtime assist that led the Midwest victory to a 4-3 victory over New Jersey/Pennsylvania.
Arseneault finishes 15-over at U.S. Women's Open
Virginia sophomore Jennie Arseneault posted a 15-over 157 during the first two rounds of the 2006 U.S. Women's Open but failed to make the cut to compete in Sunday's two final rounds. Sixty-eight players made the eight-over 150 cut, with four of 29 amateurs among them. LPGA star Annika Sorenstam beat Pat Hurst in a Monday playoff round to win the Open.
The first round was moved back to Friday due to fog at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. Arseneault posted a 6-over 77 during the opening round and then a 9-over 80 Saturday. She was the first Virginia golfer ever to compete in the U.S. Women's Open.
Crawford named to Team USA
Track and field hurdler and sprinter Erin Crawford was named Monday to Team USA for the 2006 NACAC Athletics Championships. She will compete in the 400-meter hurdles tomorrow at 10:45 a.m.
Last month at the NCAA Championships, Crawford set a school-record 56.87 in the finals during which she finished fifth.
"This is a great opportunity for Erin to represent the U.S. in international competition," said Virginia head coach Randy Bungard in a press release. "This is her first U.S. team and a nice crowning achievement on a fantastic season. I'm very proud of what she has done this year."
Jenkins becomes 11th 2007 football commit
According to an article in the July 1 edition of the Charlottesville Daily Progress, Nick Jenkins, a 6'3", 285-pound defensive tackle, has become the 11th player to commit to Virginia's 2007 football recruiting class.
Jenkins, ranked a four-star prospect by rivals.com, notched 78 tackles, three sacks and three fumble recoveries for Good Counsel High School in Maryland last season. He chose Virginia over a list of suitors that included Florida, Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee.
Wrestling adds two recruits
Virginia head wrestling coach Steve Garland announced Monday two new signees for the 2006-2007 season. Joe De Garavilla and Adam Fitterer are the two newest members of the incoming recruiting class. They join Kellon Balum, Calvin Cardillo, John Danilkowicz and Brent Fiorito.
The class has already received a No. 22 national ranking by Intermatwrestle.com.
