SPORTS IN BRIEF

Brooks taken by Cincinnati in NFL Supplemental Draft Last Thursday, former Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the NFL Supplemental Draft. He was the only player taken in the draft. The Bengals will lose their 22nd pick in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft.

Brooks entered the draft after he was dismissed from the Virginia program this past spring for off-the-field incidents. He earned All-America honors as a freshman and led the Cavaliers with 90 tackles during his sophomore campaign. Last season, however, a knee injury hampered his productivity as he started only six games and recorded 27 tackles.

"This presents a new opportunity for Ahmad and I hope he makes the most of it," Virginia football coach Al Groh said in a press release. "All indications are that he has had a pretty good last couple of months which is a good start for him as a professional. We all wish Ahmad well. He certainly has the ability to have an outstanding NFL career."

Simpson finishes second at Virginia State Amateur

Junior golfer Kristen Simpson finished second last Friday at the Virginia State Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship held at the Farmington Country Club. Simpson lost 3-1 to Carol Green, a former golfer at James Madison University.

Green won five of the final six holes to win the championship.

"I definitely gained a lot more confidence this week," Simpson said in a press release. "I'll remember this for a while. I made a couple of mistakes coming in, but [Green] played really well on the back nine."
